The many references to Jane Eyre are more entertaining Easter eggs than homage; Bell (the Disgraceful Dukes series) makes this her own story, piling on plenty of witty dialogue, unconventional characters, and hints of mystery to leave readers both satisfied and eager for the next in the series.

You don’t want to miss this story. I loved the characters in this book. We all have heard people say that they couldn’t put the book down but it definitely was the case for me. Be ready to laugh, cry and truly feel touched!

Doesn’t tug the heartstrings
Mary Poppins-meets-Jane Eyre governess has a secret past, as does the glowering Duke who employs her. It’s hard though to feel invested in either. Few sparks, little tension, and all ends as you might expect. Not Lenora Bell’s usual witty fare.
