What The Beads Remember

In a remote Yup'ik village in Western Alaska, Dr. Mara Flood arrives for what is supposed to be one year.

She has come to teach special education. She has also come to listen.

A university researcher studying grief, memory, and the ways communities preserve what cannot always be written down, Mara believes she understands the difference between witnessing a story and taking possession of it. Nuvugaq will challenge that belief.

There, she meets Agnes Petrov, an elder whose quiet presence carries the weight of generations—and whose hands work steadily with black, white, red, and bone beads.

Then Mara encounters a bracelet unlike anything she has studied before.
