As the holiday season descends on the lakeside town of Sweet Haven, public defender Victoria Grossburger recruits her old friend English professor Cameron Winter, the protagonist of this spare, heartfelt crime novel from Edgar winner Klavan (Werewolf Cop), to try to clear Travis Blake, a third generation Army Ranger who's accused of murdering his girlfriend, Jennifer Dean, a beloved elementary school librarian. Victoria's biggest problem is the evidence, including a videotape of Travis lugging Jennifer's body from the murder site. Also, Travis has confessed to the crime. As Winter delves into the murder, he begins to suspect all is not what it seems in this tight-knit community of military veterans. In flashbacks, Klavan brings the victim to life, while sessions between Winter and his therapist, Margaret Whitaker, inform Winter's backstory and take on a fairy tale–like tone that adds to the darkness of the novel and the central crime. The core of the book, though, is Winter, whose voice and strength of character drive the story, particularly in the satisfying and exciting conclusion. This terrific holiday-themed novel will leave readers unsettled and hopeful at the same time. Correction: An earlier version of this review incorrectly stated the author had been a finalist for the Edgar award.

When Christmas Comes
It is all Klavan’s fault! I try to be a responsible adult. My wife expects my routine. So do my dogs . Can I keep a routine once I begin reading “a Klavan”. No. I have to read and read and read until it is done. Klavan really shouldn’t do that. He is surely breaking up families and worse than that, coming between a man and his dogs.
By the way, I’m pretty sure that Andrew Klavan had hen Christmas Comes ghost written. In fact I am sure of it. The acknowledgment sections makes reference to Spencer Klavan. There is not such person. There is a “Spencer KlavanNoRelation”
The book seemed so real. I fact all that same stuff happened to me too just last week.
Different
What a unique Christmas story, but with all the elements needed. This is a very good story and unfolded in perfect timing. It was an ah-ha moment when it all fell in place before me. Smart, intelligent read!
A Nice Find
4 Stars. After a little bit of a slow start, this one took off. A great mystery to read during the Holidays. Winter is a very interesting Character with plenty of potential. Looking forward to the next one! This story had multiple cool elements and I think the rest of the series should be the same.
