Rebecca Burke does for the Midwest what Barbara Kingsolver did for the Southwest in "The Bean Trees" or "Pigs in Heaven." "When I am singing to you" packs a round full of punches into her story with an authenticity that anyone who has been close to the plight of what farm workers both endure and embrace can verify.
