Publisher Description
Life is full of unexpected obstacles, but there’s no challenge too big for God to handle.
Washington D.C. is crammed with people eager to bend your ear about statistics, polls, and policies. Karen Pence is more likely to talk about beekeeping—if she’s not busy teaching an art class, painting watercolors, or riding her bike.
An elementary schoolteacher who never expected to leave Indiana, Karen found during her extraordinary journey to becoming Second Lady that—despite the turbulence inherent to political campaigning, and through eighteen moves and countless surprises—God’s grace was sufficient.
When It’s Your Turn to Serve is full of heartwarming and relatable stories of being a leader, a teacher, a mom, and a Christian throughout an unpredictable life. From turning up to “Pet Night” on Capitol Hill toting a lizard, two cats, and a dog—only to find it was an event for lobbyists—to getting the unexpected news that her husband had become Donald Trump’s nominee for vice president, Karen has learned to take surprises in stride.
In this warm and deeply personal book, the former second lady shares the lessons she’s learned about God, faith, and family. Brimming with stories that mattered but didn’t make the headlines, the book challenges you to be open when opportunities arise, recognize your purpose in God’s plan, and step up to make a difference when it’s your turn.
This warm, funny, and encouraging memoir shares lessons on navigating life’s unexpected turns with grace:
Navigating Change with Grace: Discover how the Pences handled eighteen moves, raised three children in the spotlight, and made the daily choice to trust God’s plan.Humor in Public Service: From arriving at a lobbyists’ event with a menagerie of pets to her husband’s surprise VP nomination, laugh along with the relatable moments that never make the news. From Teacher to Second Lady: Follow Karen’s journey from an Indiana art classroom to the Governor’s Residence and eventually to Washington D.C., learning to embrace the mantle God places on your shoulders.Finding Your Own Calling: Be inspired by her work with military families, art therapy, and even beekeeping to recognize and step into the unique opportunities God has for you, right where you are.
PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
Former second lady Pence makes her adult debut (after the picture book Marlon Bundo's Best Christmas Ever) with an even-keeled account of her life and her relationship with God. Among other milestones, she recounts meeting Mike Pence in 1984, when he was in law school; their marriage; giving birth to three children after struggling to conceive; and her husband's rise from Congress to the Indiana governor's office and finally the White House. Writing that hers is "a story about how God... gently and patiently showed me how to wear the mantle He was placing on my shoulders," Pence portrays how faith has suffused every aspect of her life, from the decision-making behind her husband's 2000 congressional run ("This could be a real opportunity to show an example of their parents answering a call from God") to the prayers she offered during the 2002 sniper attacks in the Washington, D.C., metro area. While Pence's tendency to dodge controversy may vex some—she touches only very lightly on January 6, and not at all on the protestors' rallying cry of "Hang Mike Pence"—her staunch faith and down-to-earth rendering of D.C. political life appeal, and her strategy of mostly conveying advice by example works well. Christian readers will find some wisdom here.

How God wants us to serve
An absolute positive example of how to serve God and others while using your God given ability. To write at the end of their service in Washington with no disdain for the horrific times is truly the most gracious example of being a Christian that I have read.
