One man’s murder digs up more intrigue than a small town can handle in this gripping procedural. When local businessman Bill Sandersen is found murdered, deputy sheriff Ben Packard has got no shortage of suspects or motives to comb through. Bill stole from his now-ex business partner and owed money to his gambling buddies. Then there’s Bill’s wife, Carrie, and his ex-wife, Sherri—her sister. We loved sorting through the puzzle pieces in this slow-burn whodunit, but we became just as obsessed with Ben’s own issues (not to mention his adorable three-legged corgi). As the smart, instinctive acting sheriff of Sandy Lake, Minnesota, he’s the logical choice to run for the office during the next election. But as an out gay man with a local mystery buried in his past, there are people in this conservative small town who don’t want to see him succeed. Author Joshua Moehling builds a messy, high-stakes tangle of sordid secrets, rural politics, and county corruption. Even if you missed the prior Ben Packard mystery, And There He Kept Her, this is a great place to start the series.

Low key detective novel
It's nice to read a detective novel with well-developed characters and a strong sense of place. Enjoyed this and am looking forward to the next one in the series.
Soooo good!!
I loved this book. As much as the first Packard novel. I hope this series continues. I adore Packard, the main character. The supporting cast is easy to picture and appreciate, due to the really really great writing by this author. Who doesn’t love a 3 legged Corgi named Frank?
