Avery Keene, a brilliant young law clerk for the legendary Justice Howard Wynn, is doing her best to hold her life together--excelling in an arduous job with the court while also dealing with a troubled family. When the shocking news breaks that Justice Wynn--the cantankerous swing vote on many current high-profile cases--has slipped into a coma, Avery's life turns upside down. She is immediately notified that Justice Wynn has left instructions for her to serve as his legal guardian and power of attorney. Plunged into an explosive role she never anticipated, Avery finds that Justice Wynn had been secretly researching one of the most controversial cases before the court--a proposed merger between an American biotech company and an Indian genetics firm, which promises to unleash breathtaking results in the medical field. She also discovers that Wynn suspected a dangerously related conspiracy that infiltrates the highest power corridors of Washington.
As political wrangling ensues in Washington to potentially replace the ailing judge whose life and survival Avery controls, she begins to unravel a carefully constructed, chesslike sequence of clues left behind by Wynn. She comes to see that Wynn had a much more personal stake in the controversial case and realizes his complex puzzle will lead her directly into harm's way in order to find the truth. While Justice Sleeps is a cunningly crafted, sophisticated novel, layered with myriad twists and a vibrant cast of characters. Drawing on her astute inside knowledge of the court and political landscape, Stacey Abrams shows herself to be not only a force for good in politics and voter fairness but also a major new talent in suspense fiction.

APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
Abandoning her longtime pen name of Selena Montgomery, voting-rights activist Stacey Abrams delivers a brilliantly crafted legal thriller that doesn’t skimp on surprises. U.S. Supreme Court law clerk Avery Keene is on an upward trajectory, but then her boss slips into a coma just before issuing an opinion on a hot-button gene-therapy case. Everyone is shocked when it’s revealed that the prickly, brilliant Howard Wynn had appointed Avery as his legal guardian—a decision that sets Abrams’ heroine on a crash course with his family, the other justices, and the president. A high-stakes game of cat and mouse ensues, testing Avery’s considerable intellect at every turn—and showcasing Abrams’ formidable storytelling talents. This is a great read!
Democratic party rising star Abrams (Our Time Is Now: Power, Purpose, and the Fight for a Fair America) is more Brad Meltzer than Scott Turow in her debut legal thriller. Avery Keene, a law clerk to Supreme Court justice Howard Wynn, is stunned to learn that her boss is in a coma, and that he has named Avery his legal guardian. With Wynn the potential swing vote in a number of key cases, his medical condition has major implications, and Avery's status is contested by the judge's estranged second wife, who vows to turn off life support if Avery is granted this authority, which includes power of attorney. When Avery seeks out Wynn's nurse, who left a cryptic message on her voicemail in accord with the jurist's instructions, she finds the woman murdered. More deaths follow as Abrams pulls back the curtain gradually to reveal evil machinations in the highest corridors of power, and the action builds to an over-the-top denouement at the Supreme Court. Fans of the TV drama Scandal may feel at home, but Abrams's many political supporters may be disappointed that she didn't choose to ground her plot in real-life issues.
When Justice Sleeps
Overall I really loved the book. It kept my interested & I found myself reading as often as I could get it in. I found some of the legal terminology unknown to me & had to constantly look up a lot of the words. Afterwards I was still a bit confused as to the what & why’s of the situations they were used in. While I liked the ending, I was hoping to know if the judge ever woke up, was he able to reunite with his son, did Avery get with the son and I was hoping Avery was finally able to speak to the judge even if it were briefly. Lastly I really wanted to know whatever happened to Vance’s character. Where did he go.? Why did he drug Avery? Hopefully Vance will appear in future books as I see Stacy already has a part 2 that I can’t wait to read. Overall this was a page turner. I hope the other book is longer
Very gripping from beginning to end
Enjoyed this book immensely! Very well written and researched.
Enjoyable, even though a bit contrived
The storyline is well thought out and masterfully articulated. Stacy Abram’s talents are reflected in this work. I’ve enjoyed reading this story. The middle was a bit slow and lacked realism; but that’s fiction. Looking forward to the next one!
