Whimsically Grotesque
Two editors, Cameron McWhirter and Owen Findsen, compiled and integrated Lafcadio Hearn's works very well. Their "Introduction" summarizes Hearn's whole life thoroughly and vividly. The selected writings are from the Cincinnati Enquirer, between 1872 and 1875. Various subjects were; processing dead animals, drug addicts, mysterious beauty, thieves of corpses, ex-slave became a godfather of the underground village, murder cases, calling for deceased spirits, the bone collector, and more. Lafcadio Hearn observed those unknown eccentric low class people carefully, accusing their sins, yet he always understood humanity touch. Hearn was an extraordinary writer of the nineteen Century.
