Who Is Dayani Cristal
An Examination of Modern Day Migration
Publisher Description
Every year tens of thousands of people, driven by grinding poverty, leave their homes in Central and South America and journey through Mexico hoping to reach the USA. Their dreams often turn into nightmares as they brave one of the most dangerous journeys in the world, traveling along a stretch of desert called the “corridor of death.” Over the past ten years some 2000 migrants have died this way in Arizona alone.
We present the story of one such undocumented migrant who died in Arizona in our documentary “Who Is Dayani Cristal?” This unknown man comes to represent the issues faced by all migrants who follow the same path he did.
This interactive book extends the story to the stories of many, and to analysis of the systemic issues that impact their journeys, providing readers a deeper investigation into policy frameworks that affect the lives of migrants and border communities such as those found in “Who Is Dayani Cristal?”

Must watch
Who Is Dayani Cristal brings to light the important challenge of immigration, migration, and identity. It is a moving portrait of a young man who tries to improve his economic circumstances, but faces enormous hurdles: the law and prejudices. The portrait raises lots of questions about who we are as a society - and, more importantly, where we are going.

I saw the film and am glad to also have access to the book as it has a lot of useful statistics, arguments, contextual background and links to additional information. It is well-designed, allowing the reader to jump around and explore the different aspects easily. This is a very important topic and the extensive research done to pull together the different factors that motivate people to migrate, and the larger structural issues related to the US response to migration are critical parts of the story that need to be told.
