Publisher Description

Can we hear the Bible's warnings as real warnings without undermining justification?

Why does the New Testament so urgently warn those who have been justified by faith in Jesus Christ to endure to the end, remain in the faith, take care lest they fall, and pursue holiness? This book traces that question in a single theological movement—from justification and salvation to Jesus' warnings, final judgment and works, holiness and the guidance of the Holy Spirit, and the perseverance of the saints. Along the way, it examines differing scholarly interpretations and the arguments behind them, then returns to the biblical text to ask what can actually be said rather than simply adopting one position.

Part One, "Justification and Salvation," examines what justification means, what it means to be saved, and how faith and righteousness are related.

Part Two, "The Sermon on the Mount and the Eschatological Parables," considers "Lord, Lord," the narrow gate, and the parables of the end, asking whom Jesus' warnings address and what they require.

Part Three, "The Justified and the Final Judgment," examines warnings against apostasy given to believers, the perseverance of the saints, and the relationship between works and salvation at the final judgment.

Part Four, "Salvation and Holiness," explores the statement that "without holiness no one will see the Lord," the guidance of the Holy Spirit, and how God's preservation of His people and the believer's perseverance to the end belong together.

A distinctive feature of this book is that it reads justification, Jesus' warnings, apostasy, perseverance, judgment according to works, holiness, and the guidance of the Holy Spirit—topics often treated separately—as parts of one question about salvation. It considers the strongest arguments on opposing sides, yet does not rest its conclusions on the authority of any one scholar. Instead, it returns repeatedly to the biblical text. It does not hastily conclude that real warnings mean justification can simply be revoked, nor does it turn those warnings into merely hypothetical words on the grounds that God preserves His people.

The ground of salvation is Jesus Christ alone. Yet His saving grace is not separated from the believer's life. God preserves His people to the end, and within that grace believers continue to trust, repent, fight against sin, and follow Christ to the end. Say what the text says, and where the text does not speak, stop.
