Cursed from birth to always tell the truth, magical florist Felicity “Fliss” Farrow chooses her words carefully to avoid trouble. But when she receives an anonymous request for a mysterious flower, her search leads her directly into trouble’s path: to Willoh Vane.
Fliss knows the outcast—yet teasingly handsome—sorcerer is rumored to have used dark magic to corrupt the northern forest five years ago. She’s witnessed the resulting feud with Prince Bastion, whom her best friend, Card, is soon to marry. Despite her divided loyalty, Fliss reluctantly accepts Will’s help with gathering rare flowers and finds herself increasingly drawn to him.
As the royal wedding approaches, Fliss fears the flowers she’s delivered are intended for a sinister purpose. But when her warnings are ignored, can she and Will save the kingdom from disaster, and ultimately discover what Fliss has sought for so long—the truth.
PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
Two outcasts discover friendship, love, and acceptance while working to stop a royal conspiracy in Jenkinson's sweet cozy fantasy debut. Felicity "Fliss" Farrow has been cursed since birth to never tell a lie. The Queen of Alrick exploits this curse to force Fliss to snitch on everything happening in the Citadel, making her deeply unpopular with the townspeople. To win back some favor, Fliss works tirelessly at her family's flower shop creating enchanted bouquets. After receiving an anonymous request for a rare flower, she heads into the woods outside the Citadel, where she meets sarcastic and cocky sorcerer Willoh Vane. The former best friend to the prince, Willoh's now a pariah whose magic is rumored to have poisoned the woods. As more anonymous requests for rare flowers come in, Fliss reluctantly accepts Willoh's help sourcing them, and feelings slowly blossom on both sides. When Fliss uncovers a plot to ruin the prince's upcoming wedding, she realizes the rare flowers have a much darker purpose, and it becomes a race against time to get to the castle before disaster strikes. The prose takes on a somewhat YA tone, most strongly calling to mind Ella Enchanted, and occasional modern slang feels out of place in this medieval fantasy setting. Still, Jenkinson's whimsical worldbuilding and Fliss's charming floral magic shine. Readers seeking an enjoyable escape will find it here.
