Wildlife of Aurora

Publisher Description

Wildlife may not be the first thing that comes to mind when thinking about Aurora, Colorado-a relatively older, established moderate-size city in the Denver Metropolitan area. But Aurora encompasses a relatively large area located on the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains, and includes diverse ecosystems, from riparian to upland, and areas of short-grass prairie, Savanna, semi-montane, and mixtures of these, as well as suburban housing areas with parks, open spaces, and an extensive trail system.

Aurora encompasses twelve designated Open Space Areas, covering thousands of acres, and is home to hundreds of wildlife species, with: 78 known bird species, 14 species of reptiles and amphibians, and at least 23 types of mammals.

The following information pages provide basic, general information on the most commonly seen wildlife species in Aurora, and includes references and resources on where to find more detailed information on these species of fauna.
