Debut Author Delivers Sweet Heartwarming Historical Fiction

Rebekah Hendricks dreams of a life far beyond her family's farm in Oklahoma, and when dashing aviator Arthur Samson promised adventure in the big city, she is quick to believe he's the man she's meant to marry. While she waits for the Great War to end and Arthur to return to her so they can pursue all their plans, her mother's sister falls ill. Rebekah seizes the opportunity to travel to Texas to care for Aunt Adabelle, seeing this chance to be closer to Arthur's training camp as God's approval of her plans.

But the Spanish flu epidemic changes everything. Faced with her aunt's death, Arthur's indecisiveness, and four children who have no one else to care for them, Rebeka is torn between the desire to escape the type of life she's always led and the unexpected love that just might change the dream of her heart.

Enjoyable & informative

Rebekah is a young lady who gets more than she bargained for, when her mother sends her to Texas, to care for her mother's estranged sister who has the devastating Spanish Flu. I appreciated that some of the characters & plots were based on the author’s family, and I enjoyed about the individualized effects of the pandemic. At one point, Rebekah has her hands full with caring for a household full of people, while also juggling three potential suitors - only one of which truly has her heart. But does she realize which one is her true love? Anne Mateer did a great job of integrating Rebekah’s faith, which was and is still an important part of many people's everyday lives, but she wasn't preachy at all about it. I became so fond of these characters that I missed them, when the book ended! My only issue with Rebekah is that I believe that she put too much stock in feelings of excitement and sparks, which are actually more related to "puppy love" and infatuation, rather than the true, deep love that grows and deepens in successful and happy marriages. Other than that, I enjoyed this book and hope to read more of Anne Mateer's books.

Don't let the "religious" category scare you

Great historical romance. Yes, the characters pray a lot and have strong faith but it is not preachy and fits the era of the book. Great read.
