Instructive but contrived
I have mostly enjoyed this quick and easy tutorial. It will certainly improve any novice's game and marginally improve that of most regular players. It is presented as a series of puzzles that illustrate each of the tactics. The reader will appreciate the direct style of explanation for each example (and the lack of excessive analysis of alternative lines of thought).
However, the examples do seem a bit contrived. For example diagram 88 shows a clever way to exploit an overworked queen but just a bit more analysis would have shown a much stronger alternative move for black. Checkmate in 3 moves.
I don't want to bash Robertie for an oversight... My point is just that I feel that he gives the reader the impression that she should expect to see cases as clear as these in real play which seems a little misleading.
