Love is the trickiest spell of all.
Lucinda Caraway loves living in Freya Grove, the mystic seaside town where charms, hexes, and magical beings of all kinds are the norm. She spends her days teaching high school history and her nights reading tea leaves and tending to her conjure garden. It’s a good life . . . but she can’t stop wishing for more.
Until one night, that wish turns into a spell, and suddenly Lucy can’t say no. Not to a public karaoke performance. Not to running a 10K. And, most alarmingly, not to her high school crush, Alexander Dwyer, who needs her help unjinxing his new house—which just happens to be right across the street from hers.
Alex has spent the last ten years traveling the world on adventures Lucy has only ever dreamed of, and he’s planning to leave again as soon as his house is safe to sell. But until Lucy can unhex herself, she and Alex are stuck together. And with so much magic in the air, maybe the next spell Lucy casts will be the one that convinces him to stay.
APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
Romantic comedy and fantasy go together like peanut butter and chocolate in this charming debut. The town of Freya Grove is like any other New Jersey coastal village—except for all the witches, goblins, gnomes, and other fantastical beings who live there. Since her beloved grandmother died, Lucy, a witch, has been feeling down. When her merman childhood bestie (and crush), Alex, comes home for their high-school reunion, things get very interesting. Celestine Martin fills her debut romance with a whimsical sense of anything-can-happen and roots the novel’s magical spells in the traditions of Black American folklore. Full of quirky characters and a warm sense of family and community, Witchful Thinking is witty, sweet, and a little steamy.
PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
Martin's delightfully imagined debut rom-com introduces modern day witch and teacher Lucy Caraway, who lives a ho-hum life with her sisters in their enchanted seaside hometown of Freya Grove, N.J. As her high school reunion approaches, she's disheartened to realize she's got nothing worth noting in her high school alumnae notes. That is, until a drunken wish about all the things she dreams of doing with her life comes true. Suddenly, she is singing karaoke, baking elaborate desserts for the town's annual bake sale, and has her high school crush, Alex Dwyer, falling at her feet. After 10 years of adventure, merman Alex returns home and finds that his parents have purchased him the house across the street from Lucy's in a bid to convince him to settle down. However, though Alex has had feelings for Lucy since high school, he has serious doubts as to whether he can promise her a happily-ever-after. Martin's light touch with the paranormal makes for an irresistible romp, and her charming supernatural characters will easily entice even the most skeptical readers into this magical world. This sparkling outing marks Martin as an author to watch.

I couldn’t put it down
This book was a fantastic read. It’s been a while since I’ve had the pleasure of finding a book with the perfect balance of fantasy and romance. The author has a wonderful way of spinning words that left me on the edge of my seat. I am looking forward to whatever she has in store next.
