Emilia wants her husband back…But are the dead best left undisturbed?

1919.

Emilia's journalist husband, Owen Flett, is missing presumed dead during World War I.

When she is drawn into a séance she meets Dr McIvor, who says he can bring Owen back. Although she does not accept such a thing is possible, she wants so desperately to believe it that she agrees. And then Owen returns.

Surely the timing was a coincidence, and there must be an logical explanation? But as her joy recedes, Emilia is puzzled by Owen's behaviour. Why is he so different? Could the changes be explained by his experiences during the war, or is it something more sinister?

Something she can barely bring herself to believe.

With My Last Breath

With My Last Breath by Kaye Dobbie is about a man everyone presumed to be dead returning to life. I give this book 4.5 stars.

It's Britain in 1919. Emilia Flett lost her husband, Owen, in the war. After he's been dead for eighteen months, she visits her sister-in-law, Florence, in London where Emilia and Owen used to live. On the bus, a woman senses her crying (she's wearing a mask) and sympathetically tells her that he (Owen) wants to see her. Then she hands Emilia a flyer for a seance.

She and Florence go to this seance where Emilia meets Dr. McIvor who tells her that it's possible to get Owen back, but there will be a price. At this point, after the experience of reconnecting with Owen, Emilia is convinced that it's true, that her husband can come back. Despite reservations and fears that the doctor is not trustworthy, she doesn't care how Owen will come back to her. She just wants him back.

Well, it happens. Owen unexpectedly arrives home, but things are different with him. Emilia doesn't know why. Is it because of the war? That makes sense. Or is it because of whatever price she has to pay to get him back?

The novel then shifts its focus to the experience of having Owen back. He's not the same guy she married. His personality is different. His likes and dislikes are different. And there's a lot he can't remember.

While Emilia keeps telling herself that things will change and that everything will go back to normal, it becomes clear that he isn't the same man she married. But what exactly does that mean? Is he different because he's psychologically different because of the war? Or is he different because he's a ghost of some kind in human form? Did Dr. McIvor do something sinister or unnatural to bring Owen back to life?

As Emilia ponders this, she picks up on something Owen said. This is the mystery part of the novel. What did Owen mean? What did he do? And is the thing that he may have done the reason why he's changed so much?

The reader understands early on that something is sinister. The question is what? You're left wondering, what is the price she's going to have to pay? Who is this guy? And who exactly is Dr. McIvor? Anyway, I highly recommend this book. It's different than a lot of other books. It's atypical and leaves you guessing. I think anyone who reads this novel will enjoy it.
