The absence of a skull makes identification especially difficult, and evidence that the bones belong to a murder victim who was deliberately made into bear bait makes the need to identify the corpse urgent. Meanwhile, Brockton's b te noire, serial killer Nick Satterfield, who almost took the lives of the scientist and his family decades earlier, escapes from prison in a way that Thomas Harris fans will find familiar. Satterfield's appearance shifts the book's emphasis from interesting scientific detective work to a paint-by-the-numbers cat and mouse game with a sadistic madman. The action builds to a denouement that's predictably implausible. Bass is the pseudonym for the writing team of Bill Bass, founder of the real-life Body Farm, and Jon Jefferson.

Fast Paced and Interesting
I voluntarily received an ARC of Without Mercy by Jefferson Bass in exchange for an honest review.
Reading Without Mercy is like reading an episode of Bones! Forensics and crime stories have always been a favorite of mine, so needless to say this was right up my alley. Miranda and Waylon were by far my favorite characters. Miranda's sarcasm and lack of filter made for some entertaining dialogue throughout the story. Waylon makes me think of a big southern teddy bear.
The story was entirely fast paced, but the plot did move along at a steady enough pace to keep my interested. The only aspect of the novel I did not enjoy was the blatant inclusion of the author's political views/agenda. When I am reading a novel, I want to escape from the world and political debates.
Mr. Bass has lost his way. Stay away from politics and go back to writing.

Disappointed
I love to read. I’ve been reading since I was about 4. I love mysteries. I like trying to solve the puzzle. However, I don’t love having someone else’s politics shoved down my throat. This book was so sad and I think more of it should have been devoted to the story and less to politics. I won’t say what the worst part was because that would be unfair to anyone else who wanted to read it. I will say that if this had been my first Jefferson Bass book, it would have also been my last. I don’t mean to be unkind. I hate leaving bad reviews, but this book deserves it
