She smiled and nodded, tears streaming down her face. Patrick wanted to seal his lips against hers and bend her over the bench. He wanted to be the one to claim her.

“Why is this taking so long?”

She winced as her boyfriend’s voice filtered through the door. “C—coming!”

“Mandy, wait!”

“I can’t, doctor. I’m sorry.”

But Patrick couldn’t ignore how her wide round eyes seemed to beg for help.

“I’ll let you get dressed.”

In a towering rage, Patrick left the room and spotted Alex standing nearby with a sour look on his face.

“Hey, doc’ what took so long? I got places to be. Hey, what are you doing?”

Alex yelped as the doctor seized his collar and shoved him bodily through an empty examination room. He felt a joyful thrill as Alex scrambled to his feet, looking terrified.

“Hey, what the--?”

You shouldn’t hit him. Don’t hit him for god’s sake. Just scare him.

But then Alex walked too close to Patrick, giving him a tough-guy look that made the wolf lash out instinctively. Patrick ripped his fist across Alex’s cheek; he screamed and fell like a sack of bricks.

“Ow!”

The voice in his head disappeared in the background as his animal instincts took over. The snarling wolfish energy was building up inside him, boiling over. “Piece of shit!” He kicked his enemy in the ribs over and over, laughing at his shrill cries for help.

Alex flung his hand in front of his face, trying desperately to block his attack. The doctor’s arms were covered in dark fur; there was no other word for it. And the fingers were elongated and curved into deadly claws, each as long as his hand.

“Oh, Jesus! Please don’t kill me!”

The human wailing behind him caught his attention suddenly and he whirled around, recognizing a human girl that he needed to protect. His wolfish thoughts scrambled to recall her name; he was momentarily disarmed from the look of horror on her face. She had the look of prey, but she was his mate. He was confused.

The voice in his head was screaming. The boy tried to run around him but the wolf buffeted him with a muscled arm. He wrenched the boy’s neck backward, exposing the throbbing vein. He opened his jaws, ready to rip his jugular out and taste his blood.

The girl, Mandy, screamed at him to stop. He remembered himself. He was Patrick—a doctor. He was in his office. A sick feeling filled his stomach like poison and he let go of Alex, who tripped over his own feet in his haste to leave. He breathed hard as his fur receded into his flesh. Mandy stood shock still, wide-eyed as she witnessed his transformation.
