Byline: Atia Ali - Email: atiaalidndu@gmail.com Almost 1490 events around the world marked the centenary of International Women's Day on March 8, 2011. It is a day to celebrate the economic, political and social achievements of women. This year International Women's Day theme is about equal access to education, training, and, science and technology for the women. In 1910, Clara Zetkin - a Social Democratic Party leader from Germany - tabled the idea of observing a day to press for the demands of women of every country. Zetkin's suggestion was greeted with unanimous approval in a conference of over 100 women from 17 countries that represented unions, socialist parties, working women's clubs, and parliamentarians and thus the International Women's Day (IWD). Since 2000, the IWD is observed in many countries as an official holiday for women only. Traditionally men honour women with flowers and small gifts.
