Delightful Read
Raven has held a grudge against Bo ever since he cheated in a spelling bee when they were children. Now they’re grown, and Bo is as handsome as ever. Raven, meanwhile, feels as though she isn’t particularly good at anything. She can’t cook or sew, and she worries she can’t attract a man’s attention for the right reasons. When her deceased brother’s widow arrives unexpectedly, and Raven’s parents begin doting on her and her son, Raven decides to spread her wings by taking a temporary teaching job.
Raven doesn’t always feel like she gets teaching right, but the little girls at the school believe in her. After she tells them girls can do anything, they convince her to run for mayor. She accepts the nomination rather than let them down. Unfortunately, Bo accepts one too.
Bo is trying to step out of the shadow of his father, who took advantage of their community, and prove he’s a man worth trusting. When the men of the community nominate him for mayor, he doesn’t want to take another opportunity from Raven. But he fears that if he steps aside, someone else will run against her and win. So he stays in the race with no intention of winning. As he gets to know Raven better, he comes to admire her and the way she cares for their community.
Wooing the Rival is a delightful story about two people who want the same thing without realizing it. I loved how Bo sees past Raven’s fumbled attempts and recognizes the woman she is. Raven has admired Bo from afar for years, whenever she isn’t remembering that spelling bee, and begins to see the good man he’s striving to be. With sweet romance, adventure, and suspense, this was a fun read.
