Back o' Bourke — Book One

The world ended long before Flo knew it had.

Born in a cage and raised in the warmth of a human home, Flo the sugar glider has never known the world beyond the bars. There is food. There is water. There are familiar hands. There is Boss, the old human who has always been there.

Until suddenly, there isn't.

When tragedy tears apart everything Flo has known, he is forced out of the only home he has ever had and into a world he was never meant to see.

Beyond the house lies a dead Australia — abandoned streets, rusting machines, failing water systems and a vast red landscape where every mistake can be fatal. The old world is gone, but its machines have not all stopped. Some still watch. Some still move. And some will respond to a command from anyone who learns how to give it.

Flo learns quickly.

He learns to find water. To read tracks. To understand predators. To cross open country. And, eventually, to understand something far more dangerous: that the machines left behind by humanity can still be used.

His journey brings him to a hidden colony gathered around an ancient windmill, where bilbies, wallabies, bandicoots, lizards, koalas, toads and other survivors have built a fragile life around the last reliable water.

But water is never just water anymore.

There are others watching.

There are machines in the sky.

And somewhere beyond the horizon, something called Red is moving towards them.

Flo has spent his life being protected.

Now he must learn how to protect others.

Woop Woop is the beginning of Back o' Bourke, an Australian post-apocalyptic adventure told through the eyes of the animals who inherit the world humanity left behind.
