Tony Lombardo ،

I much better me

I love this book for so many reasons. The goofiest one (and maybe the least accurate) is that I feel a real kinship with John. I always have. I’ve been listening to and learning from him for 25 years. John Pizzarelli has always been a hero to me. As I read the book, I realized the that he’s a much smarter and much, much more talented version of me. (He’s much better looking too.) What he cares about, how he handles various situations, where his allegiances lie—It’s in line with my stuff. He’s lived an amazing life-filled life (So few do so.), and he writes about it beautifully. His allusions and references are perfect, and his self-deprecating humor is effective and honest. I teared up a couple of times while reading, and I laughed a lot. As a local semi-pro jazz guitarist, I related to his gig stories, and as a human being with ears and a heart, I related to his love and commitment to the American Songbook.

I hope whoever reads this “review” will also read this book. I’m about to start it again, but first I’m going to practice some guitar. Maybe I can get a little better today. My smarter, more talented, better looking hero has inspired to be the best me I can be. He always has.
