She's a widow newly escaped from a brutish husband.
He is fully devoted and aims to be the partner she both needs and deserves. However, they find themselves at a stalemate, with neither willing to budge.
Laurie Dixon, a lovely young widow with three rambunctious sons, is finally independent. She's managing her own business to provide for her family, and she doesn't need Matthew Whittaker to take care of her. While she suspects she's falling in love with Matthew, past scars linger, and the fear of being controlled by another man is paralyzing.
Matthew is at his wits end. He's spent the past year trying to convince Laurie that marriage isn't destined to be a sentence of misery and pain, yet she remains unmoved. To complicate matters, his brothers, Morgan and Mead, are overly eager for him to push Laurie into a commitment while they conceal secrets they refuse to disclose.
He's ready to punch both of his brothers out and take Laurie over his knee if that's what it takes to get to the bottom of both situations. A man can only take so much!

“Did one suffer a loss of intelligence while traveling through time?”
This third book in the series weaves together threads from the previous two books, picks up loose threads in the story and brings them to a marvelous conclusion as Morgan, Mead, and now Matthew find the person, and place that is meant for them. This story does a great job of building community, and keeping a large cast of interesting characters in play.
I love the balance of independence for the women, with finding a man that both allows them to be vulnerable in private moments, and helps them find something special within that makes them even stronger.
Oh, and Laurie’s kids are total scene stealers in the best possible ways.
