Publisher Description

Thurman Jenkins insists on staying on his inherited Oklahoma family farm, in spite of the continuing drought of the 1930s. Crops are ruined and pantries are empty. Many neighboring farmers have moved to California, hoping for a better life. He believes rain will soon return and the dust storms will stop. But when his wife leaves a note saying she’s had enough and gone with the Johnson family, Thurman sees only one way to solve his situation. He needs money.
He’s never robbed a bank, never even considered it. But desperate people do desperate things. As he walks into the First State Bank, his gun is easily seen protruding from of his pocket.
With cash in hand, Thurman heads west to find his family. Guilt oozes from his forehead; he cringes at the sound of every siren encountered along the way. Stopped by a California cop, Thurman comes face to face with the reality of his actions.
California eventually proves to be good to Thurman. But what happens fifteen years later takes Thurman by surprise. The gun reappears.
