A well stitched story

“Young Frankenstein” is one of my all-time favorite comedies, along with “Airplane!,” “Monty Python and the Holy Grail,” and “Christmas Vacation.” Every Halloween time it’s usually the first movie of the season, but quite often we just put it on for the sheer joy of “a roll in ze hay.”

This book is the perfect tribute to all the wonderful artists who contributed to making this classic. I read it to my wife every night over a few days. It was delightful to read aloud, any hilarious because often she’d be all peaceful and relaxed only to mumble entire lines of the included dialogue when I read them. She’d then laugh herself to sleep.

I have the greatest respect for the perfect timing, delivery, and intelligence of each performer. I so very much miss the subtle madness Gene Wilder exuded. I still gawk at those caddywhompus eyes of Marty Feldman and the genius of his improv. I fell in love with Teri Garr, while adoring every flakey privileged moment stolen by Madeline Kahn. Peter Boyle brought the perfect humanity to the misunderstood monster.

This book revives all these joyous moments with its sweet insight and warm nostalgia. We are blessed to have lived in the Mel Brooks Comedy era.
