Summary

This is a story about the unbreakable friendship between Maki, a 10 year old boy, and Zarafa, an orphan giraffe who would become the Pasha of Egypt’s gift to King Charles X of France.

The Prince of the Desert Hassan was ordered by the Pasha to take Zarafa to France, but Maki was determined to do all that he could to prevent this and return Zarafa to her native land. He follows them, risking his own life.

This long journey takes them from Sudan to Paris, passing through Alexandria, Marseille, and the snowy Alps on the way.  They have many adventures, crossing paths with Malaterre the balloonist, the strange cows Mounh and Sounh, and Bouboulina the pirate.
