As air battles with Japanese fighter planes increased over the Pacific toward the end of World War 2, the Submarine Lifeguard League was formed to rescue downed aviators who had zoomed into the ocean. The organization saved the lives of hundreds of pilots, and the emergency safety net it provided is said to have given American aces stronger confidence in their dogfights with the Japanese over the vast, empty expanses of the Pacific Ocean.
