What you have to remember at this time it was the gentry who where literate and their chronicles are written from a upper crust point of view so don't expect to find anything about the actual living standard of the common people. This book is written for and read by of people of means. Keep in mind this version was translated and published in Georgian England (1797) so the narrative is in the flowery language of the time, and again edited in 1890 which infused Victorian grammar into it.
