THE SOCIOLOGY OF KNOWLEDGE AND SCIENCE
INTRODUCTION: KNOWLEDGE, INDIVIDUAL AND SOCIETY
CHAPTER 5 SCIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE SOCIETY
A. The three dimensions of science
Science is a set of knowledge already contrasted, that is, already tested, and presumably true. But it is also a systematic way of generating new knowledge and an activity that is carried out constantly and routinely through a method and through the use of material and human resources. Therefore, IN SCIENCE THE FOLLOWING THREE DIMENSIONS MUST BE DISTINGUISHED:
1) The INDUCTIVE-DEDUCTIVE METHOD, which serves to guarantee the refutation of knowledge and is the filter of truth.
2) The RESOURCES MADE AVAILABLE FOR THE PRODUCTION OF NEW KNOWLEDGE, science as a social institution formed by organized workers and with certain material and economic resources.
3) Finally, SCIENTIFIC PRODUCTION, the body of knowledge considered certain, including the dissemination of scientific knowledge (ethnoscience) and the dissemination of technical knowledge (ethnotechnical).
