The Norfolk Broads

The Broads. Mention it, and it evokes an array of different responses. It's a haunting, sometimes eerie wilderness of lake and river, reedbed and marsh, huge skies and distant horizons, a haven for wildlife, held in delicate balance with a tourist industry that is long-established and pervasive. It's the stuff of childhood boating holidays and raucous watery pub crawls; and it's a venue for fishermen and canoeists, hard-bitten sailors and boat-loving folk of all stripes. Above all it's one of the UK's most unique and unusual landscapes, the largest wetland area in the UK, and one of the most important in Europe – a fabulous breeding-ground for birds and wildlife. Among birds, you can spot grebes, herons and if you’re lucky a kingfisher or two; you might also catch a glimpse of the rare swallowtail butterfly, which is unique to the area, or an otter poking its whiskered snout out of the water, and damsel- and dragonflies are everywhere.
