Không xuất hiện những tình huống giật gân căng thắng, tất cả đều là các câu chuyện bình dị đơn giản trong cuộc sống ngày thường nhưng được làm sâu rõ hơn ở trong các lời thoại. Đa phần ngôn từ thể hiện sự trịch thượng, mĩ miều, kiểu cách và có phần phức tạp khi đặt trong bối cảnh thế kỷ 19 tràn ngập các tước hiệu và các quan niệm về giai cấp, phẩm giá, địa vị. Lối nói của các nhân vật cũng khác biệt so với thời đại ngày nay, nhưng ẩn chứa trong đó là sự tinh tế và sâu sắc khiến ta phải nghiền ngẫm những ý tứ ẩn giấu đằng sau khi gấp cuốn sách lại.
