A story set in a small town before the automobile. The story is mainly about the women of the town, who are a close group of hardworking women, and the impact of an outside family on the town. The town has no tourist accommodations, and is not a tourist destination. The Jameson family comes to town for a family vacation. The Jamesons, are mother, grandmother, two children, a boy and a girl, and the husband who still has to work and is only with the rest of his family part time. It seems that the Jamesons have suffered some financial reverses, and thus have to economize for vacation. The go to the small town, and board with one of the women in her house, which has never happened before in the town. Mrs. Jameson is pushy, and wants to change things and people in the small town. The creates friction, Over time, the Jamesons rent a vacant farm, and move to it for the remainder of the summer. They come back the next year, and gradually the town people and the Jamesons get to know each other, and a town boy falls for the Jameson girl. after initial resistance by both mothers.
