The Letters of "Norah" on Her Tour Through Ireland

Publisher Description

This is an enjoyable read for anyone interested in the history of Ireland in the late 19th century. Written by a Canadian journalist of Irish origin around 1881, it describes the impressions of her visit. It is a bit 'diary style' and she is not a great writer but she can convey some very interesting first-hand impressions about the situation she found there. Of course, the author writes in the Victorian style of her time which is precise but also a little boring and unimaginative. It deals very much with the Land League and the treatment of the tenant-farmers and their fight against the unjust rents imposed on them at that time. Most of all, it provides a first-hand insight of the situation in rural Ireland as recounted by the people, mainly in the North and West, as seen by a foreign journalist during this troubled and tragic period.
