Number One New York Times bestselling author Kathy Reichs returns with her nineteenth riveting novel featuring forensic anthropologist Temperance Brennan, who must use all her tradecraft to discover the identity of a faceless corpse, its connection to a decade-old missing child case, and why the dead man had her phone number.
It’s sweltering in Charlotte, North Carolina and Temperance Brennan, still recovering from neurosurgery following an aneurysm, is battling nightmares, migraines, and what she thinks might be hallucinations when she receives a series of mysterious text messages, each containing a new picture of a corpse that is missing its face and hands. Immediately, she’s anxious to know who the dead man is, and why the images were sent to her.
An identified corpse soon turns up, only partly answering her questions.
To win answers to the others, including the man’s identity, she must go rogue. With help from a number of law enforcement associates including her Montreal beau Andrew Ryan and the always-ready-with-a-smart-quip, ex-homicide investigator Skinny Slidell, and utilizing new cutting-edge forensic methods, Tempe draws closer to the astonishing truth.
But the more she uncovers, the darker and more twisted the picture becomes ...

APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
If you’re struggling with confusion and headaches following brain surgery, chances are the last thing you should be doing is working, especially if that work involves a disturbingly disfigured corpse. Yet that’s exactly the situation forensic expert Temperance Brennan finds herself in. But—as seasoned fans of this hit forensic-thriller series already know and newcomers will quickly learn—there’s not much that can stop Tempe from seeking the truth. Best-selling author Kathy Reichs uses her hero’s integrity and sincerity to give this mystery a big heart. Thanks to her background as a forensic anthropologist, Reichs also fills the story with compellingly real details and brisk pacing that ratchets up the suspense.
PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
Bestseller Reichs's excellent 19th Temperance Brennan novel (after 2015's Speaking in Bones) finds the forensic anthropologist at her breaking point after a series of traumatic events, including the murder of her boss, who was succeeded by a woman who regards Brennan as persona non grata; her mother's cancer diagnosis; and the discovery that Brennan herself has a potentially fatal aneurysm. She begins to doubt her own senses when she thinks she spots a man in a trench coat lurking outside her Charlotte, N.C., home in the middle of the night, but fears that it might have just been a hallucination. She's then rattled to receive grisly images on her phone of an eviscerated male corpse without a face. Hooked by the mystery of who sent the pictures and why, Brennan risks her professional standing by pursuing the matter, despite the opposition of Charlotte's new medical examiner. The trail takes multiple unexpected turns as Brennan pursues leads connected to bioweapons, a ferry sinking, and the Dark Web, in this crackerjack puzzle. CSI junkies who haven't read Reichs before will be hooked.

A Conspiracy of Bones
This was my first ‘Bones’ book. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. The structure of the chapters are formularic with a cliffhanger statement as the final sentence. The sections of each chapter use a similar device. Some chapters read as if the final sentences was written first then the ‘meat’ was added. A disconcerting strategy.
Good pace
Great read! Nice to see Kathy release a new book.
The worst yet.
This author is heading the way of another popular forensic character, way too much angst and jarring dialogue, and not nearly enough interesting forensics and sleuthing. I have always thoroughly enjoyed the Temperance Brennan books. Not this one.
