Dads with Needs and the Interesting Outcomes
I love a full length novel but also enjoy a good short story.
MONSTER HALL PASS - Bru Baker
A sweet romance. Four stars.
KISMET AND CADAVERS - Jenn Moffatt
A nice arc from a young kid away at camp who sees something best kept secret and an older boy who looks after him, to the now grown-up kid who makes paranormal documentaries. He walks into a magic shop and meets the owner. Something sparkles between them, and it’s not the strange cat that can speak. Together, the grown-up kid, his best friend (who films the documentaries) and the magic shop owner get themselves into a bit of paranormal trouble.
A good story with an easy reading style that conveys the feels between said grown-up kid and magic shop owner. Four point five stars.
ELF SHOT - T A Moore
A dark and edgy story, this. Not everything is bright, shiny and beautiful in the fey world. This is not the easy writing style that the previous stories are, and I don’t know if it was just that I found some of it confusing. It centres around a group of changeling kids away at camp, creeping out one night to have some fun and disappearing into the fey world (woods with secrets) where time fluctuates. The ‘father’ of one of the changeling kids who crept out that night but who did return to camp, has fey blood and pairs with a man who is a member of a force that deals with these sorts of fey incidents. Three stars.
WOLF AT FIRST SIGHT - Rhys Ford
An easy read, a hallmark of Ms Ford’s writing style. This story is longer than the others, perhaps allowing the story to be more detailed and well rounded. Joseph is a cop with an adoring grandmother and Levi owns a bar that Joseph has suddenly taken an interest in, due to him seeing the owner talking to members of two biker gangs, one of which he had helped run out of town due to their criminal activities. Levi, the owner of the bar is also a shape-shifter.
I loved the story and the characters, especially Levi’s son, Declan and how Joseph and Levi just fit. Five stars.
