Publisher Description
Greeks who wanted to escape Ottoman rule moved to the closest major capital that offered a modicum of civil liberties. So Vienna became a great magnet for Greeks, especially those from NW Macedonia. While in Vienna, many of them succeeded in public service, trade, banking, education and the arts. With the encouragement of Adamantios Korais, the Paris-based leader of the delayed Greek renaissance, they also started publishing books and newspapers in order to educate the Greeks of the mainland. The first seven Greek newspapers, starting in 1784, and magazines were started in Vienna. The first Greek newspaper in mainland Greece was started in August 1821.
