Publisher Description

In this latest novel from the award-winning author of The Polyglot Lovers, a writer searching for inspiration in Spain goes on a darkly comic, delightfully absurd journey through an underground society.

Awarded a three-month stipend to travel and work, a Swedish writer flies to Madrid, where in a bar she meets a man with an extraordinary story to tell. In exchange for somewhere to sleep and to hide out for a few days, he is willing to tell her the whole astonishing tale. What follows is an account of fantastic proportions and ingredients: the existence of a shadowy Internet TV show with a certain morality clause, a threat to the storyteller’s life, a diabolical nun, and the story of a girl with a missing left thumb. The tale is also the precursor to a meeting between the writer and the infernal miracle worker, Lucia—a meeting that ultimately forces the writer to make a fateful decision about her own inner essence.

Carnality is a novel about the universal need for spirituality and truth—not to mention a good story—set in the seemingly unspiritual grimy underbelly of society.

Novel twist on spirituality

Swedish author and translator of Spanish language literature who has lived and worked in Italy and Spain for a considerable period. Has received a number of awards in her home country. This is the most recent of her works to be translated into English. Others include a story collection called ‘Many People Die Like You,’ and two novels: ‘Bret Easton Ellis and the Other Dogs’ (great title btw), and ‘The Polyglot Lovers.’
Here, a Swedish female forty-something writer gets a three-month stipend to travel and write overseas. She meets a dodgy dude in a Madrid bar. He says he has a good story for her, which he’ll tell her in exchange for a few days accommodation. He needs to hide out. From what, you ask? An internet TV show with a questionable morality clause, for starters. (Think Only Fans version of Squid Game.) There’s also a nasty nun at large trying to kill him, and a chick who is missing her left thumb. The writer ends up meeting the nasty nun (or “infernal miracle worker”) whose name is Lucia, and is forced to make some decisions about her own “inner essence,” whatever that might be. If you think this all sounds tad weird, you’re right, but Ms Wolff makes it work somehow. While this won’t be to everyone’s taste, I thought it was a hoot. (Disclaimer: As my wife is fond of pointing out, I’m weird.)
