It was meant to be a harmless stag night prank. A few hours later four of his best friends are dead and Michael Harrison has disappeared. With only three days to the wedding, Detective Superintendent Grace - a man haunted by the shadow of his own missing wife - is contacted by Michael's beautiful, distraught fiancée, Ashley Harper. Grace discovers that the one man who ought to know Michael Harrison's whereabouts is saying nothing. But then he has a lot to gain - more than anyone realizes. For one man's disaster is another man's fortune...

APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
Claustrophobics might need to occasionally turn away from this nail-biting crime thriller. Dead Simple starts with a stag-night-prank that goes horribly wrong: Michael is buried alive, trapped in a coffin with only a walkie-talkie, a bottle of whiskey and some pornography for ‘help’. The first book of Peter James’ much-loved series introduces us to Roy Grace, the Brighton-based Detective Superintendent still mourning the loss of his wife. James expertly cranks up the suspense whilst smoothly developing Grace into one of our favourite British detectives. As Roy races against the clock the novel hurtles towards its nightmarish finish and becomes impossible to put down.

Loved it
First time reading Peter James and I loved every page! Fast paced, kept me guessing even when I was sure I knew the ending.....I did not :)
Great characters. Roy Grace is my new favourite!
Boring
And the use of a ‘psychic’ to solve the problem is pure authorial intrusion; utterly ridiculous for an author to resort to such cheap tricks as using a very convenient foil to find a missing person—then why not use the “psychic” in the first place when the guy first went missing? It’s insulting to the reader to use such an absurd manner of crime solving.
The author couldn’t figure out a solution to his own plot without introducing a supernatural answer?
It’s the worst thing an author can do. The hero is supposed to solve the mystery, not a random psychic who just conveniently comes along for the ride and uses a swinging pendulum over a map while in a moving car at the end of a boring over-described plot. I won’t be reading any more of this mediocre writing if psychics are going to solve the crime and not the protagonist.
Rubbish.
Love this series
Great story. Very convincing characters. I couldn’t put it down.
