James Stark, a.k.a. Sandman Slim, has a new job, but being the new Lucifer in town gives fresh meaning to the word "Hell."

Especially when he hears of hideous massacres near a haunted fortress out on Hell's frontier. Riding a rattling Unimog through burning desert slag is nobody's idea of a promotion, but walking away from a fight has never been his style.

A convoy of nervous demon soldiers and a scholar named Geryon are supposed to help him clear the road, yet every mile past the Alpheus Swamp brings another swarm of flesh-eating horrors.

Armed with his shape-shifting na'at and a dwindling pack of cigarettes, Stark has to drag his troops through a nightmare designed to break their minds. He would much rather be back in Los Angeles nursing a drink, but keeping his crown means cutting down whatever abominations Henoch left behind.

As far as Stark's concerned, the more dead Hellions, the better, but he still has to prove that no one screws with Sandman Slim. And facing creatures so terrible even Hell does not want them is no cakewalk, even for Lucifer.
