History doctoral student Virginia "Birdie" Rhodes has no idea that magic is real when she takes a summer assistantship with Burr Island's historical society and a part-time job at the local apothecary shop. Her attraction to the shop's lonely, cantankerous owner, Jasper Prescott—who, unbeknownst to her, is the High Priest of the Burr Island Coven—is undeniable, but he's determined to protect Birdie from the supernatural and keep their relationship professional. Meanwhile, Birdie also attracts the attention of soul-devouring wraith Dáinn, sent to kill Jasper and steal the coven's spell books on behalf of his enslaver. The plot tracks the high stakes and high-heat entanglement between a wraith in search of his freedom, a witch desperate to protect his coven, and the human who captivates them both. Rath's paranormal worldbuilding is admirably detailed, but the extensive lore slows the pace. The abrupt sexual turn of Birdie and Jasper's relationship is less convincing than the instalove between her and Dáinn, but both result in truly sizzling moments. Scene-stealing side characters, especially elderly witch Hortense and Pickles the cat, add levity on the way to a cliff-hanger ending. Rath's fans will eat this up.
