Publisher Description
Gone with the Wind, first published in May 1936, is a romantic novel written by Margaret Mitchell that won the coveted Pulitzer Prize in 1937. The story is set in Clayton County, Georgia and Atlanta, Georgia during the American Civil War and Reconstruction and depicts the experiences of Scarlett O'Hara, the spoiled daughter of a well-to-do plantation owner. The novel is the source of the extremely popular 1939 film of the same name.
Gone with the Wind takes place in the southern United States of America in the state of Georgia during the American Civil War (1861–1865) and the Reconstruction era (1865–1877) that followed the war. The novel unfolds against the backdrop of rebellion wherein seven southern states, Georgia among them, have seceded from the United States (the "Union") to form the Confederate States of America (the "Confederacy").

Gone with the Wind
Best book ever written. Tells of people and their struggle to see a civilization die and how some cope better than others. So accurate and intelligent. A pure joy from page 1 :)
Gone with the Wind
I haven't read this novel for years, and reading it again as an ebook, I am so very impressed.
Mead's characterization and view of why the South chose to fight the Civil War is unbelievably impressive. For some reason it has gained the reputation of being a lightweight (if long) romance - a view reinforced by the magnificent movie version with it's great cast, screenplay and direction.
Yes it is a romance, a glorious one, but it also contains very good writing, lovely structure and a beautiful sense of tragedy. Why else would we want to constantly take Scarlett by the shoulders and shake her, while loving her determination and vitality?
As Joni Mitchell said "Shades of Scarlett conquering"...
