'This is one of Pratchett's best books. Hilarious and highly recommended' The Times
The Discworld is very much like our own - if our own were to consist of a flat planet balanced on the back of four elephants which stand on the back of a giant turtle, that is . . .
'It was the usual Ankh-Morpork mob in times of crisis; half of them were here to complain, a quarter of them were here to watch the other half, and the remainder were here to rob, importune or sell hotdogs to the rest.'
Insurrection is in the air in the city of Ankh-Morpork. The Haves and Have-Nots are about to fall out all over again.
Captain Sam Vimes of the city’s ramshackle Night Watch is used to this. It’s enough to drive a man to drink. Well, to drink more. But this time, something is different – the Have-Nots have found the key to a dormant, lethal weapon that even they don’t fully understand, and they’re about to unleash a campaign of terror on the city.
Time for Captain Vimes to sober up.
The Discworld novels can be read in any order but Guards! Guards! is the first book in the City Watch series.

The start of something amazing!
This is the first Discworld novel starring Sam Vimes and the Ankh-Morpork City Watch. For those of you who are already familiar with the genius of Terry Prattchet, I shall just exchange a knowing look and a smug smile because you are one of the blessed who already know what that man can do with words...
For those of you considering giving it a try, I am so jealous... Because you get to read them for the first time. Guards! Guards! is a relatively early work and despite being brilliant, I would not say it is his best BUT it is the first of the City Watch books and therefore the start of something special. Prattchet himself seems more like a wizard than a watchman but I assure you he knows cops inside and out.
Watching Sam Vimes drag the corrupted husk of the watch kicking and screaming into the Century of the Fruitbat to become the multicultural and modern police force it is today has been one of the great pleasures of my reading life and that is a journey that starts here. Begin... I assure you, it is a path you will be glad you took.
