In the fourth instalment of J. A. Jance’s Ali Reynolds series, the TV anchorwoman turned private investigator is called to defend the man who helped remodel her home when he’s accused of murdering his wife. Ali is soon pulled into a mystery involving betrayal, online romance and vicious murder. Jance demonstrates her talent for suspense in Cruel Intent: The prose is polished, the pace is perfect and the story is filled with breathtaking moments. Her characterisation of a cold and ruthless serial killer is particularly rattling.

After serial killer Peter Winter claims his fifth victim, who happens to be the unfaithful wife of Ali's contractor, Bryan Forester, homicide detective Dave Holman suspects Bryan did it. At considerable personal risk, Ali has to clear Bryan in order to get her house ready for Thanksgiving dinner with her gossipy, meddling mother, Edie; her son, Chris; Chris's amputee fianc e; sometime boyfriend Holman; and the rest of her cozily predictable entourage. A too conveniently noted license plate number and some unlikely Taser-wielding by Edie undermine credibility. Still, Jance's trademark breathless pace compensates for stale situations and shallow characterizations. Author tour.

A good, light thriller wth great mix of characters set in a quiet location in the US.
Having survived a couple of previous thrilling books, Ali is building a home in Sedona, with assorted; police friend, building constructors, soon to be married son and her odd purposeful mum. Then someone gets killed and she suspects the traditional spouse isn’t really at fault.
A fun book to read, paced really well, and on a couple of occasions, where I thought I’d know where it was going, headed off differently (and after 50+ years reading - that’s a bonus to me:).

Enjoyable
Great plot and characters, but found there were too many characters introduced in the beginning. In spite of that, I enjoyed the unfolding of the story and how the events all came together in the end.
