Publisher Description
A sleepy town is about to wake up and smell the turmeric lattes #DontForgetYourKeepCup
It started with the Hemsworths. Now, Byron Bay local, Aimee Maguire, is about to lose everything because she can’t afford to pay the rent. Her engagement is also on an official time-out since her fiancé doesn’t know what he wants. The last thing she needs is a surprise visit from her micro-influencer niece looking to ‘build her brand’.
Her arrival sets off a chain of events that ends with Aimee tangled up with a group of influencers-turned-reality TV stars, exposing her to the absolute worst of humanity. But somewhere amid this mother of all messes there just might be a silver lining Aimee has been searching for. All she needs to do is embrace the one thing she’s been fighting so hard against – change.
Cashed-up celebs, desperate wannabes, cranky Karens and cringe-worthy hashtags – it’s all here in this hilarious novel about the celebrification of Byron Bay and the power of letting go.

‘With his acerbic wit and brilliant take downs, James Weir is a snort-out-loud writer who turns a devilish eye on the wannabes.’ Lisa Millar
‘James Weir is a national treasure. An original talent and an intelligent and hilarious wordsmith. He's the voice of his generation.’ Sam Armytage
APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
In his incredibly funny and thoroughly contemporary debut novel, Australian journalist James Weir introduces us to bookshop owner Aimee, who’s fast becoming disillusioned with life in hippie-haven-turned-Instagram-hotspot Byron Bay. She’s at a crossroad: her fiance has called time out on their relationship and she might be about to go out of business, when she’s sucked into the orbit of a group of influencers starring in a reality TV show. Things get complicated, as whip-smart Aimee navigates her uncertain future and the changing face of her hometown alongside her fun-loving best friend, Rob. Weir’s experience as a reality TV re-capper means he’s perfectly placed to explore the comic collision of tabloid culture and beautiful, bonkers Byron. The Hemsworth Effect is the perfect beach read: it’s got a lip-curlingly passive-aggressive mother-in-law, a steamy love affair (or two!), and some deliciously kooky side characters, but it also explores the themes of transformation, belonging and friendship in a big-hearted way.
Customer Reviews
On point but dragged a bit
Living on the Gold Coast where Byron is my backyard, the depictions were so on point. Storyline dragged a bit - an easy beach read, perfect for summer holidays.
