Jordan Defense: Preserving Palestinian Identity (Jordan-Report: Palestinians‪)‬

The spectre of becoming the alternative state for the Palestinians is hanging heavily over Jordan, where the authorities have recently taken a series of measures which they say are aimed at thwarting any ploy that Israel's extreme right-wing government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu might be hatching to transfer the Palestinians to east of the Jordan River. These measures have created a state of panic and confusion among thousands of Jordanians of Palestinian origin who saw their citizenship revoked in the only Arab country which had taken in Palestinian refugees and tried to integrate them by giving them all citizenship. Under the new policy, Palestinians would be permitted to retain their status as residents of the kingdom. Residents of Jordan with families and homes in the West Bank would be issued "yellow ID cards" and Palestinians in the West Bank who have family living in Jordan would be issued green cards, entitling them to temporary Jordanian passports to facilitate travel but not granting them citizenship rights. Also, Palestinians with yellow cards who return to Palestine and receive recognition as nationals under either Israeli or Palestinian law, revoke their right to a yellow card and are issued a green card when they renew their passports. Conversely, Palestinians with green cards may be granted yellow cards in certain circumstances, such as when their parents reside in Jordan and hold yellow cards.
