PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
In this terrific international thriller from MWA Grand Master Follett (Eye of the Needle), President Pauline Green, a moderate Republican who's up for reelection, must contend for the nomination with far-right Sen. James Moore, whose macho talk appeals to many Republican voters. On the foreign policy front, Green wants to punish the Chinese for selling arms to terrorists, so she proposes a resolution against them in the United Nations. This is the first move in a political chess game between China and the U.S. that could lead to all-out war. At home, Green and her husband are having difficulties with their bright 14-year-old daughter, who's being disruptive in school. Meanwhile, in N'Djamena, the capital of Chad, CIA officer Tamara Levit is running Abdul John Haddad, a 25-year-old cigarette vendor, as a spy on the Islamic State in the Greater Sahara. These are just a few of the plotlines Follett lays out in detail and then slowly weaves together as the stakes and the suspense steadily rise. By the final pages all is made clear, and the shocked reader realizes that the story hasn't ended, it's just beginning. This is a powerful, commanding performance from one of the top writers in the genre.

Two minds
That's how I find myself after reading this book
The story is of the two giant countries facing off and eventually pressing the two red , God forbid , Red Buttons
And entwined through the story the lives and affairs associated with those two Red Buttons
But then with this powerful story going on , there on the sidelines is another story about a drug bust that is going down across Africa , while I was reading I thought maybe the two stories would collide somehow ,but they don't
Maybe I have missed something , just a little odd on one hand reading the destruction of the human race along side a million dollar drug bust
I still enjoyed it Mr Ken

Mediocre
Not his best work and I’ve read them all! I feel like his characters /story lines had unresolved endings leaving me wanting and he was missing his signature intimate scenes which he had set up but then missed the opportunity to explore further. Otherwise not a bad read but by far not as captivating as Jackdaws, Pillars of the earth or The Needle.
Another great read
Gripping and suspenseful- a great read although too close to the truth at times- heaven forbid it will ever come true ! Learnt so much about the world reading this - when cross referencing the facts were very accurate - fillet certainly does his research well - enjoying many of his books - now fir the next one -
