In the wake of the Civil War, twelve-year-old ConaLee and her mother Eliza, who hasn't spoken in more than a year, arrive at the Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum in West Virginia. Delivered to the hospital by a war veteran known to ConaLee as Papa, mother and daughter are soon swept up in the life of the facility and its characters: the night watchman who lost his eye in battle, the child called Weed, the fearsome woman who runs the kitchen, and the remarkable doctor at the head of the institution. There, far from family and the mountain home they knew, ConaLee and Eliza try to reclaim their lives, and uncover identities lost, hidden or unknown.

What is it good for

3.5 stars

The author is a much-decorated American writer. Her latest novel is set in the aftermath of the Civil War. The narrative is mostly first person through the eyes of a 12 year old West Virginia gal who is principal carer for her mute mother. Her father went off to fight for the Union and never came back. (He loses and eye and his memory.) A Confederate deserter uses the family home as a hideout, rapes Mom, gets her pregnant with twins and gives her a healthy dose of PTSD (or similar), which is why she doesn’t talk any more. He parks the twins with the neighbours and packs Mom and the 12-year old off to The Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum, an actual place. What a guy, eh?

Inmates of the asylum receive ‘Moral Treatment,’ which sounds dodgy but they are well looked after and make progress, including Mom.

Ms Phillips knows how to put together a good sentence. The writing is highly evocative, although the musings on the psychological consequences of war get a tad depressing at times (for good reason). The plot involves some magic realism, which felt a bit contrived to me. That’s the point of it, I suppose, but I’m not a big fan of magic realism.
