Publisher Description
Book 1 in the Rivers of London series, from Sunday Times Number One bestselling author Ben Aaronovitch.
My name is Peter Grant, and I used to be a probationary constable in that mighty army for justice known to all right-thinking people as the Metropolitan Police Service, and to everyone else as the Filth.
My story really begins when I tried to take a witness statement from a man who was already dead...
Probationary Constable Peter Grant dreams of being a detective in London's Metropolitan Police. After taking a statement from an eyewitness who happens to be a ghost, Peter comes to the attention of Detective Chief Inspector Thomas Nightingale, who investigates crimes involving magic and other manifestations of the uncanny.
Suddenly, as a wave of brutal and bizarre murders engulfs the city, Peter is plunged into a world where gods and goddesses mingle with mortals and a long-dead evil is making a comeback on a rising tide of magic.

APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
Lacking ambition and easily distracted, Peter Grant faces a career of paper-pushing with the Metropolitan Police. But when a peculiar murder sparks the officer’s dormant supernatural gifts, he becomes an apprentice to a powerful wizard known to colleagues as Inspector Thomas Nightingale. Populated by vampires, river goddesses, and shape-shifting villains, Ben Aaronovitch’s comedic fantasy/crime novel—the first in a series—unfolds at breakneck pace. Artful descriptions and a droll protagonist make Rivers of London both entrancing and entertaining.

If Harry Dresden was an English copper
For fans of Jim Butchers Dresden Chronicles but with a British sense of humour to boot.
back from whence i came
great read, brilliant juxtiposition of the factual (the police work) and the magical (the wizard work) all mixed in with scientific fact and the unexplained, makes for a great book. also some fantastic description settings of a city i lived in for 10 years all make for a very indulgent book for me, the first time in years i have wanted to read one cover to cover as fast as possible and wallow in that alternate reality, thanks Ben, great work mate
Disappointing end
Good plot right up until the last when it all falls in a supernatural heap…maybe the next book will explain it but very disappointing way to get the hero out of a jam by invoking ( no spoiler from me ).
