The discovery in a remote area of Cambridgeshire of a missing woman's remains reignites a cold case, in British author Frear's middling third novel featuring Det. Constable Cat Kinsella (after 2019's Stone Cold Heart). In 2012, in what was dubbed the Roommate Case, the confessed killer, Christopher Masters, lured four women to his house by advertising a room for rent and killed three of them. The fourth, Holly Kemp, escaped and went missing. Six years later, Kinsella and her partner, Det. Sgt. Luigi Parnell investigate Kemp's murder now that her body's been found. Because Kemp was killed in a different manner than the other victims, and her body was found miles away from Masters's house, the partners suspect that someone else murdered her. Parnell visits the only witness to the roommate case, but he finds her retelling unconvincing. Kinsella and Parnell's interview with a gangster, who falsely denies knowing Kemp, is also unproductive. Eventually, the pieces come together at the cumbersome conclusion. Kinsella remains frustratingly underdeveloped beyond her family's history of ties to organized crime, and the narrative can be confusing at times. Frear has done better.

Author
English. From Coventry but supports Arsenal. Always wanted to write novels and eventually did. This is the third instalment of a series based around a female detective constable from the London Met with unique insights into the criminal mind thanks to her father being one, a criminal that is.
In brief
When the body of the long sought after final victim of a psychopathic London serial killer, who has since fallen victim to a jailhouse shank, turns up in the Cambridgeshire countryside, the powers that be, some of them at least, are happy to file the case away as complete despite the M.O. being different to the other victims. Our gal and her partner DS Luigi Parnell (yes, Luigi) navigate the the mandatory twists and turns to uncover connections to organised crime and official corruption.
Narrative
Third person, various POVs, mainly Cat.
Characterisation
Pretty much your bog standard procedural detective novel dramatis personae. You don't need to have read the previous books in the series to understand where they're coming from, but it helps. The baddies are sinister rather than senselessly violent, and the rough stuff takes place off stage in the main.
Prose
Crisp, well paced genre prose that builds tension to a satisfactory denouement. The fill-in-the-gaps explanatory stuff that follows dragged on a bit IMHO.
Bottom line
Nothing new to see here but professionally written and entertaining.
