'Clavell never puts a foot wrong . . . Get it, read it, you'll enjoy it mightily' Daily Mirror
This is James Clavell's tour-de-force; an epic saga of one Pilot-Major John Blackthorne, and his integration into the struggles and strife of feudal Japan. Both entertaining and incisive, SHOGUN is a stunningly dramatic re-creation of a very different world.
Starting with his shipwreck on this most alien of shores, the novel charts Blackthorne's rise from the status of reviled foreigner up to the hights of trusted advisor and eventually, Samurai. All as civil war looms over the fragile country.
'I can't remember when a novel has seized my mind like this one. It's irresistable, maybe unforgettable. Clavell creates a world so enveloping you forget who and where you are' - New York Times
APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
A landmark of historical fiction, James Clavell’s smash-hit epic immerses readers in the life-or-death extremes of feudal Japan. The standalone entry in the author’s richly researched Asian Saga takes inspiration from a real-life English navigator to showcase the country as it was during the 17th century. Seen through the eyes of John Blackthorne, who must survive assassins and samurai while learning a new language, Shōgun explores the clash between what were starkly different cultures. Clavell deftly handles an extensive cast of characters while creating forceful action scenes and detailed settings both on land and at sea. Bringing multiple dramatic arcs to satisfying completion, this book will appeal to fans of Master and Commander and A Game of Thrones, as well as anyone who has enjoyed the Shōgun screen and video game adaptations.

Well written
It took a while to get into this book with its many characters, but as soon as I got my head around this, the story was exciting and my interest never waived. Very well written, although the ending was a bit disappointing.
